500 |a This portion of eHRAF archaeology was released in 2009.
520 |a This collection consists of 30 documents, all in English, dealing with the time period of approximately 6000-5000 BP (4000-3000 BC) in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey, and Greater Mesopotamia. The documents include relevant data on the Uruk (a major focus of the collection), Ubaid 4, Protoliterate, and Late Susiana periods up to, but not including, Jemdet Nasr. There is no single comprehensive document in this collection that covers the whole Late Chalcolithic period, although the work by Delougaz and Kantor on Chogha Mish, Iran, gives a good representative sample of this archaeological tradition and provides a large amount of data on the actual excavations done at the site as well as an analysis of the artifacts themselves. A detailed inventory of the actual artifacts uncovered at Chogha Mish is presented by Alizadeh. Additional works that deal with Chogha Mish are by Woosley (agriculture), Ortner (skull deformation), Delougaz (carbon 14 dating of plant materials), and Marschner (physical and chemical analysis of bitumen samples). Other topics of general archaeological interest in this collection include: dynamics of Uruk expansion and urbanization, relations and differences between northern and southern Mesopotamian societies, state formation and societal evolution, an analysis of the surface collections of pottery from sites in lower Mesopotamia (Iraq), economics and political development, architecture and town planning, seals and sealing, and methods of dating and laboratory analysis of artifacts. Other Late Chalcolithic Mesopotamian site reports in this collection include Tell Brak, Jebel Aruda, and Brak and Chagar Bazar.
