520 |a The period of the Aymara kingdoms follows the collapse of the Huari and Tiwanaku states to the Spanish conquest (900 BP- 530 BP). Aymara is a surviving Andean language. The geographic distribution is around Lake Titicaca and Tiwanaku valley in the Andes. The kingdoms were agricultural city-states with large communities and powerful rulers. The file consists of 10 documents. The two documents by Albarracin-Jordan (one is in Spanish, with a short abstract in English) provide an overview of the sites in the Tiwanaku Valley, and examine settlement and subsistence patterns. Lumbreras describes the lake cultures. Bermann examines a site at Lukurmata, Bolivia. Bouysse-Cassagne explores the concepts behind two Aymaran terms to understand the Aymaran world view and how it was changed by the Inkan and Spanish conquests. Hyslop uses early Spanish chronicles to formulate hypotheses about the Lupaca kingdom and tests against the data from his survey near Lake Titicaca. Kolata examines the emergence of the Aymara kingdoms following the collapse of the Tiwanaku empire. Murra describes the political and territorial organization of the Aymara kingdom, Lupaca, based on a 1567 administrative report by a Spanish crown inspector, Garica Diez. Stanish's work is based on a site survey and excavation of tombs and household dwellings in the Otora valley.
