Description
Summary:With Eblis Álvarez leading the charge, the polymath from Bogotá who writes, arranges, produces and plays everything on their recordings, the Meridian Brothers are an unclassifiable force to be reckoned with. At times, they employ the zany rock stylings of Frank Zappa, and at others they drift into psychedelic avant-garde freedom amongst Caribbean and South American rhythms, politicized chants and flavors of salsa. While things definitely drift into the absurd at times, audiences are also liable to realize just how far they have been dragged along with it all. It's a groove whose impact is felt over time, and in subtle ways. When Alvarez pops on the rhythm with alien keyboard sounds, roaring distortions into the microphone, it is a marvel to see so many heads bobbing in the audience - this is the challenge, and the allure of Alvarez' creations. Experimentation never sounded so damn catchy. This concert was recorded the same year that the Meridian Brothers released *Donde Estas Maria*, a "kind of journey from Argentina through to Mexico," for which Alvarez retreated into sonic research mode. Here, the performance includes traces from that project as well as compositions from their previous works. It's a pan-Latin rollercoaster that stays with you long after the notes have faded.
